Why headstone insurance matters

A memorial stone is more than a marker — it’s a place for families to visit, reflect, and remember. Over time, exposure to the elements and the risk of damage mean even the most carefully crafted headstones aren’t immune to harm. Headstone insurance offers protection against these unexpected costs, giving you practical and financial reassurance.

Vandalism and accidental damage

Sadly, vandalism in cemeteries still happens. Graffiti, toppling, or impact damage can leave a memorial needing significant restoration. Accidental damage can occur too — from maintenance equipment, visitors, or nearby work. This insurance helps cover the repair so the memorial can be restored quickly.

Ground movement and re-levelling

Over time, soil shifts and settlement can make headstones lean or become uneven. Most cemeteries require these to be corrected for safety reasons, which can be costly. The policy includes re-levelling cover to handle these situations.

Peace of mind for the long term

Memorials are intended to last for generations. Having memorial insurance means you won’t face unexpected bills if something goes wrong. It’s a simple way to preserve the place you visit to remember and reflect.

Quick response to phone call. Very helpful member of staff with clear and concise communication. Insurance set up in a matter of 5 minutes. Which was the same length of time I'd been on hold to a previous company. Glad I decided to hang up and try Mark Bates instead.

FAQ

If you’ve paid for a memorial stone, you’re responsible for its upkeep. Without insurance, any damage or repairs must be paid privately.

Prices vary depending on the value of the stone and location, but most policies are inexpensive compared with the cost of replacement.

Yes — many cemeteries require unstable headstones to be re-fixed for safety reasons. This cover helps with those costs.

Headstone insurance protects against accidental damage, vandalism, and re-levelling costs if the memorial becomes unstable. It also covers the repair or full replacement of the stone up to the insured value. Wear and tear, natural ageing, and damage caused during cleaning or restoration aren’t included.

Yes. Memorial stone insurance is available for both new and existing headstones, as long as they’re in good condition when cover starts.

Yes. The policy covers deliberate damage such as graffiti, defacement, or a stone being pushed over. Repair or full replacement is included up to your insured amount.

Yes. If ground movement causes the headstone to lean or become unstable, the policy covers re-levelling costs up to £500 per claim, to a maximum of £5,000 during the policy term.

Cover is available for most memorials, but very old or listed stones may require assessment to confirm value and condition before the policy is arranged.

Home insurance rarely includes memorial stones, as they’re not part of the property. Dedicated memorial insurance is the correct way to protect against damage or loss.

Responsibility lies with the family or person named on the cemetery’s memorial ownership record. Cemeteries rarely insure individual stones.
